Flagstaff, AZ: Each month, the Flagstaff Cultural Partners & Coconino Center for the Arts features a local gallery, and this month, one of my favorite galleries is honored - West of the Moon gallery in downtown Flagstaff (111 Aspen Ave. #2).
“Only one gallery in all the world greets its visitors with the friendly Queensland Heeler named Guy, The Puppy Dog Extraordinaire. That’s the kind of unique Flagstaff feel you get at West of the Moon Gallery in downtown Flagstaff. When you visit the gallery you will meet Carolyn Young who is not only a local appliqué beadwork artist but also the owner of the gallery.
Carolyn started West of the Moon in the year 2000. At that time the gallery was small and consisted of only one room to display the work of 15 artists. Since then, West of the Moon has expanded and now displays stunning work from 55 local artists.
The first thing you will notice when you walk in the gallery is the quality of the artwork. The colorful paintings and vivid photography will catch your eye. You will also be drawn to the jewelry, beadwork and pottery because of creativity and fine craftsmanship. For Carolyn Young, it is most important and essential that she displays quality art that is done by local artists. One aspect that the people of Flagstaff appreciate is our community and that community definitely shines through within the arts. Carolyn stated that the people of Flagstaff help support her gallery so in turn, she would like to support and display the local artists. Carolyn stated, “It comes around full circle.”
This month West of The Moon will have a themed show titled Random Hearts. A large number of local artists will display work that was created for the theme. The artists are all unaware of what each other will be creating so it will be interesting to see the what kind of work will come out of such an eclectic group. Come by for the February’s ArtWalk to see the Random Hearts show. There is also a chocolate tasting theme for this months ArtWalk so come get your chocolate on!
Stop by West of the Moon. It’s located at 111 Aspen Ave. #2. View some art, say hello to Carolyn Young and give Guy, The Puppy Dog Extraordinaire a pat on the back, he’s working hard.”

Flagstaff, AZ: February 3, 2009 - The future of Riordan Mansion State Historic Park is at risk to the latest budget cuts issued by the Legislature. The Parks Board voted unanimously today to proceed with planning moves that could include closures or layoffs.
Riordan Mansion is one of the jewels of Flagstaff, and with our tourism based economy - this would be a huge blow to our market offerings - not to mention our sense of culture and pride in our history. We’ll keep you posted on how you can voice your concerns over this important decision.
Yes, we’ve finally given in and joined Facebook - which is honestly a lot of fun, and somewhat addictive.
